Bethlehem Steel Locomotive Engineer Experience

Science, art, and manufacturing come together in these hands-on, kid friendly, demonstrations where participants learn how to prepare sand molds to receive molten tin and create a product to take home. Metal Melting for Kids is part of our Free Family Sundays initiative. Each Sunday, youth 12 and under receive free admission when accompanied by an adult. Metal Melting for Kids occurs on the First and Third Sundays of the months of February through April from 12-3pm.

Have you ever wondered how a steam engine works or what’s inside an engine? Join us for an exciting youth workshop to explore the history and science behind the steam engine – including a live demonstration of the Museum’s own Corliss Steam Engine. Under the guidance of our education and exhibits team, participants will build their own working steam engine model to take home! Pre-registration required

This unique mini workshop will add activities to the popular metal melting for kids events. Liquid tin will be poured into a mold, but after cooling and being removed from the mold, the tin will be run through a hand cranked rolling mill built over 130 years ago. Like a penny smashing machine, the rolling mill will lengthen the tin and provide a surface that names, initials, and/or designs can be stamped into.

Join us for a guided tour of the National Museum of Industrial History specially created for the Youth & Family audience. Led by an experienced Museum Educator, participants will experience a fun, educational and interactive tour. $15 per person, pre-registration required.
