The Lehigh Valley Railroad and the Anthracite Coal Industry, 1852 to 1902

Dr. John Smith, Lehigh University’s Department of History Professor Emeritus, will trace the evolution of the Lehigh Valley Railroad from a regional railroad to being part of a national network.
Dr. John Smith is Associate Professor Emeritus at Lehigh University. Dr. Smith initially went to school for engineering. His technological background has provided him a unique perspective on the history of technology and industry. After receiving his PhD from the University of Delaware in 1986, he went on to become a Newcomen Fellow in Business History at Harvard Business School from 1986 to 1987. He joined the faculty of Lehigh University in 1987. Dr. Smith has been recognized for his notable work on the research and development at DuPont corporation. He received the Newcomen Prize in Business History for Best Book Published in America and is on the editorial board of American Chemical Society Books.
